In its household form, salt is familiar

important in modern industry, for it is indispensable
in soda technology and other areas of applied science.
Though most of us are acquainted with the everyday
uses of salt, its chemical and mineral properties
are less well known; information about the scientific
nature of salt can help us increase our appreciation
of this versatile substance.

Form : six-sided cube.
Colour : colourless and transparent ; sometimes
appears white because of light refraction.
Degree of hardness : 2.0 to 2.5 on the Mohs mineral
scale (roughly equivalent to calcite).
Specific gravity : 2.16 times as heavy as an equivalent
volume of water at 4.
Melting point : 800.(liquifies at temperatures of
800 or over).
Boiling point : 1400.(evaporates at temperatures
of 1400 or more).
